President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army battalion in Kwara State, as part of efforts to strengthen security and intensify operations against banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The new military formation will be sited in Omu Aran, the headquarters of Irepodun local government area, and is expected to improve troop deployment and operational capacity in communities facing persistent security challenges.
Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq announced the approval in a statement issued by his Deputy Chief Press Secretary, describing the move as a major boost to the state’s security architecture and a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property. The governor expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the request, saying the new battalion would enhance ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the state.
He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, for his prompt response to the state’s request, while acknowledging the support of the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies in tackling criminal activities.
The approval comes amid growing security concerns in parts of Kwara, particularly in Babanla community in Ifelodun local government area, where residents have reported recurring attacks by suspected bandits. In the latest incident, one person was reportedly killed while another was abducted, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures to curb criminal activities in the affected communities.
